INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS

White Settlement ISD offers a variety of special programs that provide maximum learning opportunities for students with a wide range of abilities and interests.

Dual Language Program

To serve a growing Limited English Proficient population, Liberty Elementary implemented a kindergarten dual language program in 2003-04 in which students receive instruction in both English and Spanish for part of the school day.

The district expanded the program to serve our pre-kindergarten and first grade students this year.

Next year, Liberty Elementary will expand the program to second grade, and North Elementary will begin offering Dual Language to its pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students.

Research proves that if you offer a dual language approach, it benefits both the English speaking and Spanish speaking students.

Adult English as a Second Language Program
The district offers an adult evening English as a Second Language program at Liberty Elementary. More than 50 individuals completed the program in 2003-04. Call the school office at (817) 367-1312 for more information.

Caring for Cubs
More than 100 students at three of the district’s elementary schools participate in Caring for Cubs, an after-school program which targets academically at-risk and economically disadvantaged students.

The free program provides students with time after school to do their homework and receive tutoring, eat nutritious snacks, hear guest speakers, and take field trips to local art and science museums. The program is fully funded through grants from local businesses and organizations.

Character Through Karate
The Tannahill Intermediate School physical education curriculum includes a six-week course called Character Through Karate. This program began as an after-school program and teaches goal setting, nonviolent conflict , and self-defense skills. Every student has the opportunity to earn up to his/her gold belt in Kihido karate; and as part of the program, all students participate in the National Random Acts of Kindness program. Dual Language Program

To serve a growing Limited English Proficient population, Liberty Elementary implemented a kindergarten dual language program in 2003-04 in which students receive instruction in both English and Spanish for part of the school day. The program will continue in kindergarten and be expanded to the first grade in 2004-05.

First Class Learning Center
A child care program, First Class Learning Center, is available to employees’ and students’ children (ages birth to five years). Click here for more information.

Get A Life! Career Day
For the past three years, Brewer High School and Brewer Middle School have presented a Get A Life! Career Day. Students have the opportunity to speak with individuals from various career fields including pilots, architects, firefighters and police officers, environmental specialists and individuals with different medical professions. Students receive promotional materials from these companies and speak with experts about training, education and recruitment.

Head Start
As part of a collaboration between WSISD and the federally-funded program, two licensed, certified WSISD teachers instruct students at the Head Start facility for part of the day. Head Start employees also teach the Head Start curriculum. Students eligible for the district’s pre-kindergarten program and Head Start attend pre-kindergarten at the Head Start building.

Pre-kindergarten programs are also available (to qualifying children) at three of the district’s elementary schools. Click here for more information.

Holiday Tree Writing Project
For three consecutive years, the district and the City of White Settlement have co-sponsored a Holiday Tree Writing Project for pre-kindergarten through seventh grade students.

To prepare students from select grade levels for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, they write letters to local businesses and organizations asking them to sponsor Christmas trees. All students then make decorations for more than 60 trees, and the community is invited to a tree lighting ceremony. Click here for more information.

Partners in Literacy Seminars
For the past three years, the district has offered a series of Partners in Literacy seminars for parents, grandparents and caregivers of children ages three through five. The seminars, offered in English and Spanish, provide tools for participants to prepare their pre-schoolers for reading and starting school.

Teams of Tomorrow
In 2003-04, the district implemented the Teams of Tomorrow (TOT) program in the second through sixth grade physical education classes. The unique training program focuses on ball handling and dribbling skills. Designed to teach eye/hand coordination and promote self-confidence, the children have the opportunity to participate in special performances for the public during half-time of the high school and middle school basketball games.
