Brewer Senior Awarded Leo C. Benavides Award for Volunteer Efforts

Brewer High School senior Emma Crabb received Challenge of Tarrant County's Leo C. Benavides Award on April 19. Tarrant County high school students receive the honor for outstanding volunteer and mentoring efforts.

The award is designed to celebrate the empathy, understanding, dedication and caring demonstrated by these students who have shown a strong interest in the welfare of others by volunteering time, listening to others’ concerns, and providing leadership in assisting others in problem solving.

Crabb is pictured with White Settlement ISD social worker Hannah Hughes, who nominated her.

"Emma is an advocate for students who struggle with mental health issues like depression, self-harm, or suicidal ideation," said Hughes.

"She's active in all of Brewer's mentoring programs and never misses an opportunity to engage in community service with PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership), Student Council, National Honor Society and Dream Team," said Hughes. "She loves others well and shows that by being trustworthy and caring."

Her PALS sponsor Natalie Virdell, said, "Emma is one of the most reliable PALS, always participating in service activities and doing amazing things with the group."

An avid rugby player through a club rugby team, Crabb says rugby has made her a leader both on and off the rugby pitch.

"As a young lady you have young girls who look up to you in wonder because you're almost breaking tradition," she said.
