White Settlement ISD honored veterans in the community with a celebration on Nov. 6.
Staff Sgt. Mike James, a 1982 Brewer High School graduate, spoke about the selflessness exhibited by veterans and the sacrifices they make as well as their families.
James, who served eight years in the Air Force, said his family members have a combined 100 years of military service. He remembered loved ones who had laid down their lives to serve their country.
"When you think of a veteran, these are the heroes," he said. "Because they gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation of ours, you should be thinking of them and their families."
He challenged audience members of all ages to set goals and have big dreams as a way to pay respect to the veterans who lost their lives and to remember their sacrifices.
"They can't dream their dreams as big as they want to be, make plans or set goals, but you can," he said. "The only obstacle standing in your way is self-doubt."
The event included a video with images of veterans from the community as well as patriotic performances by the Brewer High School band, varsity choir and jazz band.
