2012 Hall of Fame

Introduction

The Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will accept nominations for the 2012 inductees March 1 through 31. Individuals may nominate individual athletes, teams, coaches and officials from at least 10 years prior to 2012.

To date, two coaches, six teams and seven individuals have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are: coaches Ben Davis and Kenny Williams; the 1958 girls' basketball team; the 1967 football team; the 1984 football team; the 1987 baseball team; the 1990 boys' basketball team; the 1994 baseball team; individuals Dorothy Griggs Morris, class of 1956; William Roach, class of 1956; Linda Goodger Tucknies, class of 1959; Clint Jaynes, class of 1984; Margie Tyrone and Rick Brown, class of 1990; and Ben Fay, class of 1992.

The committee will reevaluate all nominations previously received and not inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The 2010 and 2011 inductees are invited to attend two upcoming meetings on Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. and Monday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. At this time, inductees will have the opportunity to provide input regarding the 2012 nominees. The Executive Nominating Committee will conduct its first round of voting at the April 5 meeting and the second round of voting on April 25.

Both meetings will be held in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 401 S. Cherry Lane, White Settlement, TX 76108. Please let me know if you plan to attend so we can ensure that everyone is accommodated.

2012 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

The Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee selected five inductees into the 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame on May 1, 2012. To date, the Hall of Fame includes 20 inductees.
 
Inductees are:
Bennie Howe, Class of 1958
Jeff Cody, Class of 1959
Matt Davis, Class of 1992
1989-90 Football Team
1963 Girls' Basketball Team
The recipients were honored during pre-game of the first home football game on Sept. 7 and during a Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Sept. 8.
 
Bennie Howe, Class of 1957
Named All-District football in 1954, ’55 and ’56, Bennie Howe won the 100-yard dash and broad jump in District in 1954. He also won the 100-yard dash at the 1955 and 1956 District Track Meets.
 
Football Captain in1955 and 1956, Howe also played outfielder for the 1956 District Baseball Champions.
 
He lettered in baseball, football, basketball and track for three years and received a football scholarship to the University of Houston, where he played tight end. He retired as a coach in the Houston area junior highs and high schools.
 
Jeff Cody, Class of 1959
A three-year basketball letterman, Jeff Cody was the 1959 Coaches 5-AAA All-District Outstanding Player, averaging better than 19 points and 26 rebounds per game.
 
Named Honorable Mention on the Texas Sportswriters Association all-state team, Cody also received the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News All-District Awards.
 
He was selected All-Tournament in the Weatherford College and Handley Tournaments.
 
Voted Best All-Round, Cody also lettered in baseball and football. He received a four-year scholarship to Midwestern State University.
 
Inducted into the Texas Association Basketball Hall of Fame, Cody was a high school head basketball coach for 43 years. A nine-time District Coach of the Year, Cody was the 1996 Oil Bowl All Star Coach and TABC All Star Coach.
 
He is also a four-time Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year and the 1997 Star-Telegram Metroplex Coach of the Year.
 
His career highlights include: a state runner-up team; a state semi-finalist; three regional finals; two regional semi-finals; two regional quarterfinals; four area finals; and numerous district and bi-district playoff wins.
 
Matt Davis, Class of 1992
A 1992 Top 100 Football Prospect in Texas, Matt Davis earned 1st Team All-State honors as a receiver and 2nd Team All-State honors as defensive back. The 1992 All-Tarrant County Football Receiver, Davis was named All-District Football and MVP for District 8-4A.
 
A member of Texas Basketball Magazine’s 1992 All State 2nd Team and the 1992 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team, Davis was also selected for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-Region 1st Team in 1992 and the 2nd Team in 1991. He was also named All District in basketball in 1992.
 
His junior year, Davis was named All-District 8-4A MVP in basketball; All-Tarrant County Football Defensive Back; and District 8-4A All-District Football Receiver.
 
A member of the All-Academic football and basketball teams his junior and senior years, Davis was selected as the 1990 District 8-4A Sophomore of the Year in basketball.
 
Also a track letterman, Davis participated in the National Honor Society, Student Council and was named Who’s Who.
 
He played for the University of Texas Longhorns team that won the last SWC Championship and the first Big 12 Championship; he played in three bowl games.
 
He is pictured with his teammate, Ben Fay, a 1992 graduate and Hall of Fame inductee, who shared childhood stories and memories of their playing days. 
1963 Girls’ Basketball Team
The 1963 Girls’ Basketball Team won back-to-back District Championships in 1962 and 1963. They defeated Duncanville ISD for the Bi-District Championship and won their first game in the Regional Tournament at North Texas State University.
 
During the Regional Finals, the team was defeated by West ISD by only 6 points; the West ISD team won the 1963 State Championship.
 
The ’63 Brewerettes won trophies in every tournament they played during their junior and senior years, and the entire starting lineup received All-District honors. Three girls were selected as 1st Team All-District, and three were selected to 2nd Team All-District.
 
Three team members were offered scholarships to play basketball at Wayland College.
 
Team members are: Lynda Sawyer Beams; Mary Kemp Clark; Phyllis Rauls Costephens; Linda Rhodes Draper; Drinda Dearing Fiske; Gwenda Jones Gaston; Jenny Griggs; Frances Rhodes Holland; Myra Walker Jaynes; Shirley Sandlin Matthews; Dolly Cowsar Padenrea, Bobbie Moore Swann; Linda Sessions Tatum; and Juretta Kirkland Wells.
 
Team managers are Pam Gustafson Askins, Betty Adkins and Nancy Goggans Winn.
                       
Coach is Ellen Johnson. Under her leadership, the Brewer girls’ basketball program advanced to seven District Championships and two Regional Finals.
1989 Football Team
The 1963 Girls’ Basketball Team won back-to-back District Championships in 1962 and 1963. They defeated Duncanville ISD for the Bi-District Championship and won their first game in the Regional Tournament at North Texas State University.
 
During the Regional Finals, the team was defeated by West ISD by only 6 points; the West ISD team won the 1963 State Championship.

1989 Football Team
The 1989-90 football team has advanced farther in the playoffs than any other football team in Brewer history. With a 11-2 season record, the ’89 team won the District Championship.

Team members are: the late Joey Adkins (represented by his father, James at the football game), Robbie Alsbrooks, Richard Bautista, Lloyd Bircher, Brian Bowman, Jody Brannon, Rick Brown, Brandon Chenault, Carl Cole, Kevin Crisp, Matt Davis, Trevor Edwards, Jarvis Edwards, Ben Fay, Gene Floyd, Scott Franklin, JV Giron, Lucho Giron, Jeremy Greer, the late Tony Harmon, Mike Ikerd, Perrick Johnson, Skip Lindley, James Lohman, Mitch Martin, Joe Matlock, John McMillin, Jason Moore, James Nored, Rick O’Henley, Boyd Oomging, Chris Petro, Pat Pitman, Troy Proctor, Randy Summerhill, Spencer Taylor, Kenny Tuck, Scott Wright and Marc Young.
 
The team beat Northwest Texas 42-0 to take the Bi-District Championship, and they defeated Stephenville to win the Regional Championship, and the ’89 team advanced to the Area Championship game against Big Spring.
 
Ben Fay, Tony Harmon and Rick Brown were named to the All-Tarrant County 1st Team, and Coach Ben Davis was selected All-Tarrant County Coach of the Year. Trevor Edwards was named to the All-Tarrant County 2nd Team, and Fay was also named All-Tarrant County Sophomore of the Year.
 
Several players earned 6-4A all-district honors. Rick Brown was Most Valuable Player, Tony Harmon, Defensive Player of the Year; and Ben Fay, Sophomore of the Year.
 
Team members John McMillin, Brandon Chenault, Rick O’Henley, Trevor Edwards; Chris Petro, Skipper Lindley and Gene Floyd were selected for the All-District 1st Team.
 Spencer Taylor, James Nored, Brian Bowman and Scott Franklin were named to the 2nd team, and Ben Davis was selected as Coach of the Year.
 
Several players had the opportunity to play at the college level.
 
Head Coach is Ben Davis, and coaches are: Bob Auten, Ted Fay, Al Gonzales, John Herrick, and the late James Roller. Roller's sons, David and Jordan, accepted the honor on his behalf. Trainer is Randy Reaves.

Nomination Process
Nomination forms for the 2012 C.F. Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be accepted March 1 through 31, 2012 and should be submitted to the Communications Office via email, dcoyle@wsisd.net; fax 817.367.1309; or mail, 401 S. Cherry Lane, Fort Worth, TX 76108.

Nomination categories are: Athlete, Coach, Official or Team. Athletes must have graduated from Brewer High School a minimum of 10 years prior and earned at least two varsity letters. Nominations of coaches and officials must be at least ten (10) years since leaving Brewer High School.
