March 16, 2020
We hope you are enjoying your first week of Spring Break. We realize the extended break due to the Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) has created many concerns and questions, and we hope this will answer some of them. District officials continue to participate in daily phone conferences with the Texas Education Agency, and we are in contact with state and local public health officials. We will provide you with updates regularly via Skylert, the WSISD website, and our social media.
We are in unchartered territory, and we greatly appreciate your support and patience. We will continue to do all we can to support our Brewer Bears.
Students in grades kindergarten through six received instructional materials that were sent home on Friday, March 13. Students in grades 7 through 12 will have lessons through Canvas. Most of the handouts are available on our website.
What if I didn’t receive the materials?
If the printed materials are not available on the website, your teacher will send them through SchoolStatus on March 23. We will also have a plan so families can pick up the materials the week of March 23 (if your child did not receive them on March 13). We will include this plan in future communication.
If you or your child has questions regarding assignments, please don’t hesitate to email your child’s teacher through SchoolStatus or district email. Your child’s teacher(s) will begin communicating with you through SchoolStatus on March 23. Our team members will continue to provide educational support to our kids so they can be successful during the break. The assignments should not create added stress for your family or your student. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Our website also includes a variety of free, online learning resources for families.
Gov. Greg Abbott has waived all STAAR testing requirements for the current school year.
Free Breakfast and Lunch WSISD will provide free breakfast and lunch for any WSISD student up to age 18 at Liberty Elementary, 7976 Whitney Drive in White Settlement, and North Elementary, 9850 Legacy Drive in Fort Worth, from 7 to 9 a.m. Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3. Meals will be provided by our Child Nutrition Department in a drive-through pickup to limit contact.
We will also have a distribution by the WSISD Paw (Food Pantry) (as scheduled) on Wednesday, March 25 for qualifying families. This, too, will be a drive-through pickup to limit contact. Pickup will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. or 4:30 to 6 p.m.on the east side of Brewer High School, 1025 W. Loop 820 North, on a first-come, first-serve basis.Families will receive at least 1 box of pre-packaged groceries. Families who have not previously applied should complete the application online.
We believe this is a vital need in our community, and we know that this will help our families who will be facing hardship in the coming weeks.
Future Plans and Events
At this time, we have not cancelled events beyond April 3. We will take this one day at a time and under the advisement of the CDC and local and state officials. In the event that this changes, we will communicate with our families immediately.
It is possible that school districts will be required to close beyond the extended two-week period. Again, we will adhere to the advisement of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as local and state officials. Our desire is for our kids to get back to learning and to finish the year strong; however, our priority is to ensure that they stay healthy.
We will continue to update our website often with resources that will help you and your family.
