Every fifth through 12th grader in White Settlement ISD (more than 4,000 students) received a Dell laptop this school year.
Brewer Middle and Brewer High School students have a laptop for school and home use, and all fifth and sixth graders have a Dell laptop that’s used at school.
“The Dell laptops are an extension of our students’ learning,” said Carla Nored, WSISD Instructional Technology Coordinator. “Whether they’re researching online, exploring, or collaborating with one another, it’s become a part of our students’ learning process.”
“Taking the laptops home provides our secondary students with access to learning anytime and anywhere,” said Nored. “Through the district’s Learning Management System—Canvas—students can access assignments, presentations, documents and more.”
Students use their laptops to write, revise and edit papers, collaborate online, and receive constructive feedback for their work from their peers and teachers.
“They participate in interactive science labs and use touchscreen pen annotation,” she said.
“This enables a teacher to upload a PDF in Canvas and then students can mark on the document to show their answers … just like using a pencil and paper … but saving paper and enabling our students to further enhance their use of technology.”
Every WSISD student now has a device for use in the classroom. The iPads that were previously used at the upper grade levels are now used at the elementary schools.
