Brewer High School students won numerous awards during the UIL Academic Competition on Jan. 12.
The Copy Editing team of Laney Roper, Jeslynn Huddleston and Aaron Torres, won first place overall. They earned fourth, fifth and second place, respectively.
The Journalism team won second place overall. Aaron Torres won first in Headline Writing, and Gabriella Vidana took first in Editorial Writing. Vidana won third for Headline Writing. Laney Roper earned fifth in Feature Writing, and Braylee Schlegel earned fourth in News Writing and Headline Writing. Madison Garcia placed sixth in Feature Writing.
The Poetry/Prose team won first overall. They are: Mimi Coffey, third place, Prose Interpretation: Upperclassmen; Scott Ellis, first, Poetry Interpretation: Upperclassmen; Austin Sykes, first, Prose Interpretation; E’lycia Larry-Lewis, first, Poetry Interpretation: Underclassmen Nick DeLeon, third, Prose Interpretation: Underclassmen; Faith Sandstrum, fifth, Prose Interpretatation; and Zauria Thomas, fifth, Poetry Interpretatation; and Braxdon Cannon, third, Poetry Interpretation.
Rachel Kelly took fourth in Spelling and Vocabulary.
Other competitors were: Madison Garcia, Caleb Haynes, Claudia Salinas Salazar, Cesar River Gonzalez, Haley Raines, Joshua Humphry and Christina Nicholson.
