School Hours
WSISD will extend the school day by 30 minutes for the 2020-21 school year. The Texas Education Agency has advised school districts to prepare in the event of a district-wide closure during the year due to COVID-19. The additional 30 minutes will enable WSISD to "bank" additional student minutes. This will help ensure that students are not required to attend school beyond the days set in the calendar.

Here are the new school hours. Drop off and pick up times will be provided at a later date.

Attorney General Grants School Districts Authority to Start School In Person Earlier - WSISD to Begin In Person Sept. 9

The Attorney General’s Office announced today that school districts are not required to follow the recent executive order requiring school districts to only provide virtual instruction Sept. 9 through Sept. 25. WSISD believes it is in the best interest of our students, staff and families to begin school Sept. 9 with our previous plan in which families can opt for in person or virtual learning. Students who opt for in person learning will begin school IN PERSON starting Sept. 9.

As we stated prior to the executive order, the Sept. 9 start date enables our school district to implement our health and safety protocols and train our staff members in preparation for the 2020-21 school year.

We are confident that our Return to Learn Plan ensures that our team members are well-equipped for the changes and challenges of 2020-21. We are excited to move forward with our original plan and prepare for the return of our students.

To enhance the health and safety measures implemented at Brewer High School, school officials have created a Return to Learn transition that will limit the number of students in the building at one time.

ALL Brewer High School students who opt for In Person Learning will participate in a Blue/Gray Schedule during the first grading period of school. Students will attend school in person every other day (2 days a week and virtually/at home 2 days a week). Every other Friday, students will attend school in person.

The implementation of the Blue/Gray Schedule will help limit the number of students in common areas, hallways, the cafeteria, drop off and pick up, etc.

  • The Blue/Gray Plan will begin Wednesday, Sept. 9 for ALL students who opt for In Person Learning.
  • Students who opt for In Person (the Blue/Gray Schedule) will be eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities such as band and athletics. Students may choose to participate in the extra-curricular on their virtual learning days; transportation may be provided on those days to  eligible students.
  • Students will attend on their designated days based on address (i.e. students from the same household will attend school in person on the same days).
  • School officials will reevaluate the Blue/Gray schedule throughout the first grading period.
Students who previously opted for virtual learning and now wish to attend In Person on the Blue/Gray Schedule should email dcoyle@wsisd.net.
  • Students who opt for In Person Learning (Blue/Gray Schedule) only need to complete the online returning student registration that will be emailed the week of Aug. 3.

Virtual Learning

  • To provide our team with ample time to plan and prepare for the 2020-21 school year, families who wish to select the Virtual Learning option are highly encouraged to reserve their space now through July 31.  Please review the comprehensive information and then click the form at the bottom of that page to enroll your student in that learning option.
  • Students who opt for virtual learning can change to In Person Learning at the end of the grading period.

More details will be provided regarding schedule and laptop pick up in mid August.

WSISD believes it is in the best interest of our students, staff and families to begin school Sept. 9 with our previous plan in which families can opt for in person or virtual learning. Students who opt for in person learning will begin school—IN PERSON—starting Sept. 9.

As we stated prior to the executive order, the Sept. 9 start date enables our school district to implement our health and safety protocols and train our staff members in preparation for the 2020-21 school year.

    In Person Learning
  • Students will attend school five days per week in a standard school setting. (Click here for Health and Safety Protocols.)
  • Families who opt for In Person Learning only need to complete the online returning student registration that will be sent out via email the week of Aug. 3.

    Virtual Learning

  • To provide our team with ample time to plan and prepare for the 2020-21 school year, families who wish to select the Virtual Learning option are highly encouraged to reserve their space now through July 31 to assist WSISD in preparing for class sizes, virtual learning, social distancing, etc.
  • If your circumstances change and you need to change your child's learning model, please email dcoyle@wsisd.net no later than Aug. 26. To complete the Virtual Learning Application, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page.

To enhance the health and safety measures at Brewer Middle School and in response to feedback from our families and staff, school officials are considering a third instructional option at BMS that will limit the number of students in the building. If at least 150 families are interested, BMS will offer the Blue/Gray Option that would enable students to attend school in person every other day. The addition of the Blue/Gray instructional option will help limit the number of students in common areas, hallways, the cafeteria, drop off and pick up, etc.

To select your student’s Instructional Plan for 2020-21, complete the form.
Families who opt for Virtual Learning must also complete the Virtual Learning Application.

Option 1: Blue/Gray Schedule
Students will attend school in person two days per week and every other Friday. On days they are not on campus, they will participate in virtual learning at home.

  • Students who opt for the Blue/Gray Plan will be eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities such as band and athletics. Students may choose to participate in the extra-curricular on their virtual learning days.
  • Students will attend on their designated days based on their address (i.e. students from the same household will attend school in person on the same days). If you have a student who also attends Brewer High School, your students will be on the same blue/gray schedule.

Option 2: In Person Learning

  • Students will attend school five days per week in a standard school setting. (Click here for Health and Safety Protocols.)
  • Families who opt for In Person Learning only need to complete the online returning student registration that will be sent out via email the week of Aug. 3.

Executive Order Mandates Virtual Learning Only through Sept. 27

The Tarrant County Public Health Department issued an executive order today that mandates public schools to conduct all classes online through Sept. 27. The order was created to control the spread of COVID-19. The Sept. 27 date will enable health officials to monitor numbers after the Labor Day holiday.

The first day of school in WSISD will remain Wednesday, Sept. 9; however, all students will be required to participate in virtual learning the first 2 1/2 weeks of school, in accordance with the order.

We will continue to ask families to make a decision regarding virtual or in person learning, despite the fact that all families will be required to participate in virtual learning Sept. 9 through Sept. 27. Families who plan to opt for virtual learning in 2020-21 should still complete the Virtual Learning Application so we can plan accordingly for the year.

Families who opt for Virtual Learning will receive an email at the end of August with the date for a Parent Information Meeting. All current WSISD families who complete the Virtual Learning Application will be accepted.

Online Returning Student Registration
All returning students (In Person and Virtual) will receive an email the week of Aug. 3 to complete Online Returning Student Registration. Families should complete the online registration no later than Aug. 14.

School-Sponsored Events & Activities
All school-sponsored events and activities including athletics and band may only take place remotely or outdoors, with social distancing requirements of a minimum of 6 feet, facial coverings, and other established safety protocols required. We realize UIL-issued guidance today, but we anticipate that this will change as this order succeeds the UIL decision.

Special Education
Our Special Programs Department is developing plans for students who are served by the Special Programs Department. We will communicate plans with those families in the coming weeks.

Meal Service
Our Child Nutrition Department will also develop a plan to provide meal distribution to students. Families can still pick up meals every Tuesday at Liberty Elementary and North Elementary from 7 to 9 a.m.

Technology Deployment
We will provide communication regarding the deployment of technology for students in the next couple of weeks.

Questions
We have received many questions from our families and are trying to answer them in a timely manner. We are developing an FAQ that we will post on our website this week. We appreciate your patience as we continue to plan and tweak as necessary.

Now, more than ever, I want to remind you that we ARE Brewer Strong, and we—as a community—will survive and thrive.

Thank you for your patience and continued support as we gear up for the 2020-21 school year. WSISD will provide two options for instruction: a traditional,
in school learning experience and virtual learning for students not planning to return to the in-person school setting.

While we are planning for these two instructional environments, please know that adjustments may be necessary throughout the coming year based on  guidance from Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Education Agency, and other local, state and federal agencies. This direction has changed repeatedly over the last several months and will continue to evolve based on COVID-19 conditions across the state and our community. It will be our commitment to keep our families informed of those changes and updates, and student and staff safety will continue to be our highest priority.

We have created a section on our website, 2020-21 School Year, that provides families with the Health and Safety measures WSISD will implement as well as detailed information regarding the Virtual Learning instructional option. We encourage you to read these details so you are able to make the most informed decision for your child.  Please keep in mind that each campus will determine the use of each space, class sizes, social distancing, etc. based on student enrollment numbers, these details will be developed by the campus teams once families select their student’s learning option.

Health and Safety Protocols

In Person Learning

To secure your child's spot for In Person Learning, families will complete the Online Returning Student Registration starting Monday, Aug. 3. Families will receive an email, and a link will also be posted on the WSISD website.

Virtual Learning

To provide our team with ample time to plan and prepare for the 2020-21 school year, families who wish to select the Virtual Learning option are highly encouraged to reserve their space July 20 through July 31. Please review the comprehensive information and click the form at the bottom of that page to enroll your student in that learning option.

We realize that the current situation is evolving and that your family circumstances may change. If your circumstances change and you need to change your child's learning model, please contact your child's school no later than Aug. 26.

Our students will now begin school on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

¡Manténganse a salvo! ¡Vamos Osos!

Superintendent of Schools

We hope you're having a great summer and that you are staying healthy and safe!

Thank you so much to all of you who completed the Back to School Survey and provided your feedback. We were excited that overwhelmingly our families desire for their children to return to school in August.

WSISD will provide two options for instruction in 2020-21: a traditional, at school learning experience as well as a virtual learning experience for students not planning to return to an in-person school setting. We are awaiting final guidance from the Texas Education Agency before we finalize our plans. We realize you need this information as soon as possible so you can plan for the upcoming school year, and we greatly appreciate your patience. The first day of school is Aug. 19, and we can't wait to see our Bears! It's been WAY too long!

We will provide communication with details and expectations regarding these instructional options for our families, safety measures, and much more the week of July 6.

We will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch for our Bears and the children in our community every Tuesday including the week of July 4.

Grace Baptist Church will pre-register qualifying families for its Back to School Bash (school supplies and more) now through July 19. And, pre-registration for the Tarrant County Back to School Roundup for qualifying families begins July 1.

Please visit wsisd.com for the latest back to school information. Our offices will be closed Friday, June 26 through Friday, July 3 for the holiday. Be safe and have a great 4th of July.
